Proposals for marking escape routes in coal mines

Abstract: The chapter presents the sources of fire danger in the mines and the requirements of mining regulations regarding to the escape routes in mines. Present state of escape route markings is represented. The main part of the article is to provide proposed by the authors ways of marking escape routes. The authors propose the application of reflective signs and so-called " life safety rope". The life safety rope consist of suspension cable and fasten markers. Life safety rope simplify crossing by escape routes, even in conditions of total lack of visibility. The study demonstrates that the average transition speed in conditions of total lack of visibility, is about 39 m/min, it is even slightly higher than the average speed in terms of smoky average, used to calculate times of transition the escape routes.

Economic and environmental benefits resulting from the changes of standards for the values of heat transfer coefficients in buildings

Abstract: Final energy consumption in the residential sector in Poland in relation to final energy consumption in all sectors of the economy stands at about 30%. The thermal insulation of building walls, constructed in order to reduce the energy demand of buildings for heating is economically justified. Hence the amendment of legislation in reducing the heat transfer coefficient of various elements of the building is most desired. The paper examined the economic and environmental benefits arising from changes in the value of heat transfer coefficient in the legislation. Normative values of this coefficient to be implemented in 2017 are justified economically and ecologically in Polish conditions. The payback periods of economic costs related to larger thicknesses of thermal insulation (from the requirements for 2014 to the requirements since 2017) emerge within 2-8 years, and environmental costs in the range of 1-5 years, depending on the heat source used in the building.

Capabilities and limitations of decreasing mercury load in polish bituminous coal in the production process

Abstract: Mercury is one of the most toxic elements contained in bituminous coal. Poland is considered to be the biggest Hg emitter of European Union because of significant carbonization of its economy. It is possible to greatly decrease the mercury load in the production processes of hard coal. Poland’s problem is the large share of raw coals use in power engineering. The Hg content in raw coal remains unchanged. Increasing the range of coal enrichment in polish collieries is feasible but difficult because of current market situation. The reduction of Hg content in bituminous coal could be possible by addition of product of larger granulation to average the fuel quality. However these coals are traditionally used for household heating.

Selection and preparation of candidates to the role of a quality auditor – a critical analysis

Abstract: The author of this article discussed the issues of selection and preparation of the candidates to the role of a quality auditor which appear to be important factors influencing the process itself as well as the results of an audit process. He also developed his own procedure in this respect which is divided into 10 stages. There is a clear division of activities that are related to the preparation of the auditor and those which are related to the preparation of the lead auditor. At each stage the actions which are necessary to secure a proper conduct of this preparation were presented. The whole procedure was thoroughly analysed. The author also paid attention to possible threats appearing in various stages of the procedure as well as he presented common mistakes made by organizations. In conclusion, he said that the selection as well as proper preparation of candidates to the role of a quality auditor has a significant impact on the effects of their work. Therefore, an organization and especially the person managing the audit process should take the responsibility for taking actions and the effects resulting from these actions.

Keizen system implementation in an automotive company – case study

Abstract: In the 21st century one cannot avoid combining the modern model of production management with the philosophy of continuous improvement. This is particularly visible in the automotive branch. The automotive market is characterized by very high dynamics, constantly increasing requirements from customers as well as requirements resulting from the changing (stricter) legal regulations: fumes emission standard, safety level, restrictions in the use of various kinds of materials etc. To meet the demands and ensure their enterprises’ competitiveness on the market, producers are introducing modern, proven methods of management and organisation. They willingly base their activity on Lean Management principles. The major tools (co-dependent and mutually supportive) of this method include: VSM, 5S, TPM, SMED. However, transferring Japanese management systems into European conditions alone does not guarantee success. This results from the fact that Far Eastern concepts originate from the culture-bound Keizen philosophy, which is based on team work. The major pillar of the Keizen philosophy is engagement of all the employees in the improvement process, which contradicts lower-level employees’ individualism, so deeply rooted in Western culture. The strength of Keizen lies in the fact that while using the existing tools, the developed technology as well as the knowledge and experience of employees, it does not require high expenditures, changing an enterprise on a step-by-step basis. This gives a considerable advantage over the Western approach, mainly based on innovative, expensive activities, which require the engagement of specialists and lead to big, rapid changes. In the article a manner of implementing in an automotive company have been presented.

Mining dumping and aquatic environment on the mining areas of the Czech Republic

Abstract: Karviny Region is an area in the Czech Republic, recognized as the most ecologically threatened. There are many landform changes caused by mining, conducted without the goaf backfilling. In addition to the deformation of the area, which has a negative impact on the ecosystem also is noticed breaching of water conditions. This area is characterized by a large number of hollows and basins having a several hundred meters depth. depending on local hydrogeological conditions some hollows are filled with water, thereby creating a floodplain. The elaboration presents the status of water quality of three chosen reservoirs, caused by coal mining, in the Czech Republic. These three reservoirs, which are located in different places were analysed using a comparative approach.

The perspectives of post mining terrains reclamation in the city of Bohumin – case study

Abstract: The process of land reclamation reaches many industrial wasteland. However, the surface of post-mining land requires a lot of activities and budgets to level any remaining of the old infrastructure located in this area. The Upper Silesia region, covering both areas on the Polish and Czech side, is known to be principal region, where the underground coal mining process is running. As a result of mining activities, land-mine and area lying near to the mine begin to transform. Therefore landscape area is changing and there are various kinds of destruction of land, residential buildings and roads. The actions related to the restoration of the utility value of degraded areas should consistently carried out, looking primarily from the inhabitants of surrounding area point of view. The excavated area of reclamation and its proper management, in the future can bring huge benefits for the city and its inhabitants.
